Unieke editie ADHD-Café op 8 april – Wetenschap en ervaringsdeskundigheid komen samen

April 2025: Op dinsdag 8 april organiseren onderzoekers van ons lab samen met het ADHD-Café Nijmegen een speciale editie. Deze avond staat volledig in het teken van kennisdeling en ervaringsuitwisseling. PhD student Lessa Schippers en postdoc Amy de Roubaix presenteren hun onderzoeksresultaten en studenten van het honourslab ADHD Escape room gaan in gesprek met de bezoekers van het café.

Het ADHD-Café is een initiatief van Impuls & Woortblind. Dé belangenvereniging voor volwassenen met ADHD, dyslexie en dyscalculie. Sinds augustus 2024 organiseert vrijwilligster (en tevens ervaringsdeskundig coach) Mandy Gout, iedere tweede dinsdag van de maand een bijeenkomst bij restaurant De Vier Heeren op de Sint Annastraat in Nijmegen. Het doel is om ervaringen uit te wisselen, herkenning en erkenning bij elkaar te vinden. Dit is voor veel deelnemers heel erg helpend bij het leren omgaan met ADHD en het omarmen van de positieve aspecten van een bruisend brein.

Intussen zijn wij ook bezig met allerlei initiatieven om het leven met ADHD beter te begrijpen. Dit voorjaar werken er namelijk 15 studenten van de Radboud Universiteit en de HAN samen aan een project waarin ze een Escape Room ontwerpen die ADHD op een ervaringsgerichte manier inzichtelijk maakt. Ongeveer een derde van hen heeft zelf ADHD; de anderen willen door middel van dit project beter begrijpen hoe het is om met ADHD te leven. Tijdens het ADHD-Café delen zij hun eerste ideeën en vragen ze het publiek om feedback. De Escape Room zal dan vanaf omstreeks juni te bezoeken zijn in het Donders Brein Museum.

Wat kun je van het ADHD-Café van 8 april verwachten?

· Korte lezingen met onderzoeksresultaten over ADHD:

-Positieve aspecten van ADHD 

-Percepties van neurodiversiteit bij volwassenen met ADHD 

· Studenten pitchen hun eerste ideeën voor de ADHD Escape Room en horen graag jouw feedback!

· Informele borrel om verder te praten en ervaringen te delen.

New group members Luca, Inge and Amy present themselves

oct 2024: We have three excellent new group members, and they present themselves here:

Luca Hargitai

My name is Luca, and I am a visiting PhD student from the University of Bath in the UK. My research explores life outcomes in autism and ADHD and aims to improve our understanding of these neurodevelopmental conditions across the lifespan. I am particularly interested in how neurodevelopmental traits relate to mental health and I am passionate about utilising robust research to inform clinical practice in mental healthcare.

During my research placement, I will be investigating psychological strengths in ADHD. Through this project, we hope to better understand how being aware of these strengths and using them in everyday life relates to people’s wellbeing.

Amy de Roubaix

My name is Amy De Roubaix and I am a Belgian researcher with a background in pediatric physiotherapy. For the past seven years, I have investigated the early signs of the neurodevelopmental condition ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder’ (DCD) and its impact on children and their families. Since DCD very often co-occurs with ADHD, I am excited to broaden my research focus within the psychiatric research group at UMC Nijmegen.

I believe it is important to focus not only on perceived challenges but also on the positive aspects and opportunities of neurodivergence. I am excited to explore these strengths more deeply as a postdoctoral researcher. I will be working on the NWO Vidi project, ‘ADHD SPARCS,’ which examines the positive aspects of ADHD as reported by those around individuals with ADHD, how context influences ADHD-related strengths, and the neurobiological factors underlying these strengths.

Inge van Walraven

I am Inge Walraven, and I have been working at Radboudumc for 9 years. In recent years, I have been responsible for recruiting participants and communicating with participants for the Healthy Brain Study, a research project focused on the brains of people in their thirties. This project has now been completed.

On October 1st, I started as an Information & Communication Officer in Martine Hoogman’s group. In my new role, I will focus on establishing and maintaining a network for Radboudumc employees who are neurodiverse. The goal of this network is to share scientific knowledge about, for exmple, ADHD with employees and to gather input from employees with ADHD regarding research ideas and outcomes. I am very excited to get started with this wonderful project.

Emma Laan wins Bex thesis award

Sept 2024: We are so proud to report that Emma Laan, honours student in our lab, has won the Bex thesis award for the best bachelor thesis of biomedical sciences. On September 20, during the graduation ceremony, the prize was awarded to Emma. At the ceremonie she gave a presentation about her thesis and internship project. Emma was enrolled in the honours program, and for her honors internship Emma visited the University of Bath. Here she had a leading role in setting up a quantitative study on strengths, strengths knowledge and strength use in ADHD, all of this under the supervision of Luca Hargitai, Punit Shah and Martine Hoogman.

Congratulations Emma, so so well done!

Sept 2024: heel trost zijn wij dat Emma de Bex scriptieprijs voor beste bachelor scriptie bij biomedische wetenschappen, heeft gewonnen. Op 20 september, tijdens de diploma uitreiking gaf Emma een presentatie over haar scriptie en stageopdracht. Emma volgt het honours programma, waarvoor ze een stage deed in het buitenland. Zij bezocht de onderzoeksgroep van Punit Shah aan de universiteit van Bath. Emma heeft een onderzoek opgezet naar de sterkte kanten van ADHD, en ook gekeken naar ‘strength use’ en ‘strength knowledge’. Tijdens haar stage werd ze begeleid door PhD-student Luca Hargitai, Punit Shah, beide vanuit Bath en Martine Hoogman vanuit Nijmegen.

Job alert: vacature voor een postdoc (Dutch)

Oct 2023: We hebben ruimte voor een postdoctorale onderzoeker in onze onderzoeksgroep. Voor details de vacature site hier. Het betreft een project over positieve aspecten in ADHD en maakt deel uit van het NWO-Vidi project van Martine Hoogman.

We zoeken iemand met een achtergrond in de psychologie, in de gedragswetenschappen of iets wat daar aan grenst. We zoeken iemand die Nederlandstalig is, dit in verband met een van de taken van het project (interviews afnemen/kwalitatief onderzoek). We hebben een leuke en jonge onderzoeksgroep bestaande uit 5 enthousiaste promovendi en een onderzoeksassistent, daarnaast wordt de groep ieder jaar aangevuld met meerdere bachelor en/of master studenten van verschillende studies. ADHD world congres 2023 in Amsterdam

May 2023: The world federation of ADHD hosted the ADHD world congres 2023 in Amsterdam this year. The theme of the congres was ‘Modernizing the concept of ADHD’. There were contributions from our group: Lessa Schippers presented at the ERC meeting prior to the congres, Martine presented her work on strengths in ADHD on Friday in the first plenary session of the day and Lessa again presented in the young scientist session (where she won the Young Scientist Award!) on Saturday. It was also great catching up with former PhD-student Zhaomin Wu, who continued investigating ADHD back home in China and displayed her work in Amsterdam. New PhD-student Han was also attending the conference (with the help of the KNAW early career award of Martine) and got overwhelmed with all the ADHD research that is out there. Good inspirations for her and her work on creativity and well-being in the context of ADHD. Hopefully her work will be part of the next meeting, in 2 years in Prague.

The meeting attracted >1400 attendees, among which many colleagues from Nijmegen, collaborators from our (inter)national collaborations such as MocA, IMpACT and ENIGMA-ADHD, and also our your researchers from ADHDplaza. You can imagine how much fun we had, seeing all these familiar faces in one place.

Group meeting: introductions with emojis

April 2023: Now that we are really of substantial group size, we are formalizing our interactions with a Hoogman-lab-meeting. In this meeting we share our ideas and our research output and offer support to each other. Our group currently consists of 4 PhD students, 2 master students and 1 research assistant. We started with introducing our projects through emojis. This was the result:

Really interesting to see how we all found different ways to put the concept of ADHD into emojis.

April 2023: Nu onze groep een echte groep begint te worden, hebben we besloten om een formele groeps-meeting te organiseren waarin we ons werk delen, feedback geven en support bieden. Als start hebben we geprobeerd om ons eigen onderzoeksproject/onderwerp in emojis uit te drukken. Dat bleek nog best lastig! We hadden allemaal andere emojies voor ADHD bedacht, van kangoeroes tot veel emoties en pijlen op en neer. Creativiteit en brein waren dan weer wat makkelijker.

We welcome Han Fang as a new PhD student in our group

June 2022: Han Fang is joining our lab from September 2022 onwards, for a 4 year PhD project. She was successful in obtaining a Chinese Scholarship Counsel Fellowship and will work on a project that continues where the NWO veni project on ADHD and creativity ended. This project is entitled’ ADHD and creativity: a deeper understanding of one of ADHD’s strengths. Warm welcome Han!

Feline van Agten

June 2022:

Nam Phuong Le is a first year master student Medical Biology, Radboud University. She will join our lab to write a review article on the topic of strengths in ADHD and ASD.

Feline van Agten is a Cognitive Neuroscience master student from the Radboud University. She will join our lab from September 2022 until Juli 2023 and will work on a project that is looking into neuroimaging, creativity and ADHD.

Rowen Riezenbos is a student Medicine. For her bachelor internship she will join our lab for 3 months, starting in September 2022. This internship is about learning the basics of scientific research. Her project is on ADHD, creativity and schoolperformance in adolescents (picture will be added).
