June 2022: This week we heard that the ADHDplaza project, initiated and set up by Martine Hoogman and Jeanette Mostert, was awarded the NWA science communication grant (50k) from the Netherlands organisation for scientific research (NWO). We are very happy with this news!

About the project

Martine Hoogman and Jeanette Mostert (departments of Psychiatry and Human Genetics, Radboud University Medical Center) have obtained an NWA science communication grant (50k) for their ADHDplaza project. Pilot data indicated that knowledge about ADHD in youngsters is limited, but the need for information about ADHD is high in this group. To inform adolescents about ADHD, Martine and Jeanette have set up a consortium of Dutch ADHD experts and collaborated with the Dutch organization for people with ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia Impuls & Woortblind. In their project, PhD students will visit middle schools to bring information about ADHD, but also to collect information about what they want to know and learn about ADHD. The expertise that is present within the consortium is used to answer those questions in an attractive manner, and will be posted on the ADHDplaza platform. This way the information will become available for all (young) people in the Netherlands. This project is also aimed at training science communication skills in young researchers in the ADHD field, a valuable quality that they can add to their CVs. Feb 2022: On the 14th of February Martine went to Amsterdam for the KNAW Early career award ceremony. It was a small but festive gathering with laudations and inspiring words of the president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), Ineke Sluiter. Febr 2022: Een dagje Amsterdam voor Martine. Op 14 februari vond in het Trippenhuis in Amsterdam de uitreiking van de KNAW early career award plaats. Het was een kleine maar feestelijke bijeenkomst met mooie laudatios van onder andere Professor Andre Aleman, en inspirerende woorden van de president van de KNAW, Ineke Sluiter. Febr 2022: Chiara Beneduce and Martine Hoogman were interviewed by the student magazine of the Radboud University Nijmegen. They both won the KNAW early career award 2021.

Feb 2022: Frontiers in Psychiatry has presented a special collection of articles to promote the work of women in STEM research. Neeltje van Haren (Erasmus MC Sophia Childrens Hospital, Rotterdam) and me have taken the role of editor and made an inspiring selection. The collection can be found here.

At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM* research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM* careers. Therefore, Frontiers in Psychiatry offers this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of Psychiatry.

Due to the success of the 2021 edition, the successor for the year 2022 was launched this week!

Febr 2022: Frontiers in Psychiatry heeft een speciale collectie van artikelen gepresenteerd om het werk van vrouwen in STEM* onderzoek te promoten. Neeltje van Haren (Erasmus MC Sophia Kinderziekenhuis, Rotterdam) en ik hebben de rol van editor op ons genomen en een mooie selectie gemaakt. De collectie is hier te vinden.

Op dit moment is minder dan 30% van de onderzoekers wereldwijd vrouw. Langdurige vooroordelen en genderstereotypen ontmoedigen meisjes en vrouwen om afstand te nemen van wetenschapsgerelateerde gebieden, en STEM* onderzoek in het bijzonder. Wetenschap en gendergelijkheid zijn echter essentieel om duurzame ontwikkeling te garanderen, zoals benadrukt door UNESCO. Om traditionele denkwijzen te veranderen, moeten meisjes en vrouwen worden aangemoedigd om STEM* carrières na te streven. Daarom biedt Frontiers in Psychiatry dit platform om het werk van vrouwelijke wetenschappers op alle gebieden van de psychiatrie te promoten.

Wegens succes van de 2021 editie, is deze week de opvolger voor het jaar 2022 gelanceerd!

Feb 2022: Frontiers in Psychiatry contacted Martine after she won the ECNP rising star award in 2020. Together they discussed the topic of positive aspects of ADHD and ASD. This resulted in a special issue entitled: Looking at it from a Different Angle: Positive Aspects and Strengths Associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders. The co-editors are Corina Greven (Cognitive Neuroscience, Radboudumc, Nijmegen) en Fengyu Zhang (Global Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Bethesda, USA). The deadline is 28th of Feb 2022! (now extended to 1st of May)

Febr 2022: Naar aanleiding van de Rising star award van ECNP in 2020 werd er vanuit Frontiers in Psychiatry contact gezocht met Martine om een special issue te wijden aan het onderwerp van positieve kanten van ADHD en ASD. Inmiddels is dat special issue gelanceerd en bestaat er nog de mogelijkheid om wetenschappelijke manuscripten in te dienen die verbonden zijn met het thema: Looking at it from a Different Angle: Positive Aspects and Strengths Associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders. De co-editors zijn Corina Greven (Cognitive Neuroscience, Radboudumc, Nijmegen) en Fengyu Zhang (Global Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Bethesda, USA). De deadline is 28 febr 2022! (de extended deadline is 1 mei)

Nov 2021: From November 2021 onwards our group is also affiliated with the department of Psychiatry of the Radboudumc, next to the department of Human Genetics. This gives us many new opportunities for collaborations and a lot of inspiration for new research projects.

Nov 2021: Vanaf November 2021 is onze groep ook geaffilieerd met de afdeling Psychiatrie van het Radboudumc, naast de afdeling genetica. Dit geeft ons een heleboel nieuwe mogelijkheden voor samenwerkingen en heel veel inspiratie voor nieuw onderzoek.

Oct 2021: We welcome a new member in our group: Lisa Horstman. She will work with us all on the IMpACT, ECNP and ENIGMA-ADHD projects, as a research assistant.

Okt 2021: We zijn blij met de komst van Lisa bij onze onderzoeksgroep. Zij zal ons ondersteunen bij drie verschillende onderzoeksprojecten: het IMpACT2 project, het ECNP project en ook bij ENIGMA-ADHD. Welkom Lisa!

Nov 2021: Martine Hoogman has won the early career award from the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences. Martine is one of the three winners in the domain of Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences. The award, consisting of €15,000 and a work of art, is intended for researchers in the Netherlands who are at the start of their careers and have original and innovative research ideas. The KNAW Early Career Award is awarded on the 14th of February 2022.

Nov 2021: Martine Hoogman wint de early career award van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen. Zij is een van de 12 jonge onderzoekers, onderverdeeld in 3 categorieën, die de prijs in ontvangst mag nemen. De prijs is voor onderzoekers die aan het begin van hun carrière staan en vernieuwende, originele onderzoeksideeën hebben, en bestaat uit een bedrag van 15.000 euro te besteden aan de ontwikkeling van de carriere en een kunstwerk. De uitreiking van de KNAW Early Career Award vindt plaats op 14 februari 2022.

Dit jaar heb ik de Rising Star award gekregen van de European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP). Daar ben ik natuurlijk heel trots op! Helaas kon ik de prijs niet persoonlijk in ontvangst nemen op het jaarlijkse congres, vanwege COVID19. Op zondag 13 september kreeg ik via de digitale weg de award uitgereikt door Prof. Meyer-Lindenberg op het virtuele ECNP 2020 congres. Het contrast kon niet groter zijn toen ik 10 minuten later alweer in het speeltuintje met mijn kinderen aan het spelen was ….het blijven gekke tijden!
